歌名：“Somke Gets in Your Eyes”- the Platters

(為五黑寶合唱團所唱，他們包含４男1女，屬早期最成功的搖滾樂團之一，成名在1955-1967。除本曲外，另外 “Only You, The Great Pretender, Twilight time, Unchained Melody….” 均很受歡迎)

歌詞- Lyrics:

I of course replied, 當然我回答

【歌詞特色與分析】:

1.     押韻: 除了knew與true押(u) 外，大都押(ai) 之音，如，replied, inside, denied, find, blind, fire, realize, deride, hide, dies, eyes共11字。一般抒情曲喜用長母音或双母音，本曲亦不例外，似乎有意表達『音長情更長』?

2.     用兩種expression 表達「失戀」：

a. my love has flown away；b. I am without my love。fly away…用風吹走表示『戀情結束』，略近中文的『吹掉了..』，顯然中西文人看法一致。又有些人喜用lost love表達失戀，是不正確，lose +someone是指死了家人，如She lost her son in the car accident. (車禍中她蒙受喪子之痛)。

3.     All who love are blind,…..= All who are in love = Those who are in love…所有談戀愛者。英文有說， “Love is blind.” (情人眼中出西施) 雖比原句正式，但缺乏年青輕人用語的活潑。

4.     When your heart is on fire…；on fire= burning正燃燒中，其主詞多半指房子或物品，如The house (或car) is on fire. 但，heart is on fire.. 是心在燃燒? 中國人指人體器官的灼熱，用怒火 (因在中國五行觀念，心屬火) 表示，歌詞此處的on fire應比喩為aspiring for…或 having a passion for…應指激情或渴望之意，總之，歌詞用字甚佳。

5.     原作者在歌詞中用了兩個與『笑』有關的較難的字，一為chaff，另一為deride；前者為揶揄，後者為輕視的笑，當然還保留一個 “gaily laughed…”-高興地笑，整首歌用多三個不同的笑字，真一絕也。

6.    Something cannot be denied; tears I cannot hide…第一句用deny(否認true love?)；第二句用hide (隱藏)- 含情不自禁地落淚，又隱藏不了，豈為真愛之流露乎?！…. 。前句指事情-看不見；後句指淚水-看得見。

7.     fire, -火燒中，應有flame-火焰，”when a lovely flame dies…”指一段戀情的結束，用lovely flame比喻a romance，妙詞！用die表示「消失」= die out = disappear亦為神來之筆!

8.     愛情之火熄了，必有煙 (smoke) 。俗謂 “There is no smoke without fire.”-『有煙必有火-即「無風不起浪」』故後接smoke gets…….

9.     “Smoke gets in your eyes.” 是歌名，也是整段歌詞意思的總結 (summary) 。中國人形容某人『眼中不容有一粒沙』，乃比喻人的肚量狹獈，西方人用眼中有smoke與中國的『霧裡看花』，或台灣的『霧煞煞』有相似亦有相異之處，但均有羅曼蒂克之味道。中國人眼中無「煙」，僅霧造成景物之朦朧；西方人的「眼中有煙」則有「盲目」的隱喻。本句與前面的 “All who love are blind….” 相呼應。

10.影片中雖無原五黑寶的老景幕出現，但用現代影片的karoke，由現代年青人來詮釋老歌詞的意義，配合現代KTV畫面，令人對歌詞更易深入瞭解，表達方式確別具風味!
