Shit 一字，原意指人體或其他動物的大便，是不雅的字，但是公認存在的。母親教導小孩上大號要說， “going to pooh pooh…”，而不用shit，若說 “I am going to shit …”就很好笑，因變成不是上洗手間，而是『我要耍賴，要騙你』。

作名詞用：Shit 常用在感嘆句中，表示強烈的厭惡(disgust) 、失望或意外的高興。(注意：以下用法有些並無不雅之意)

a.     指商品(merchandise), 表示品質或作工(workmanship)差 (inferior quality) ，

What kind of shit are they selling here? (他們在此地賣什麼玩藝兒?) - 含輕視之義。Shit on her suggestions! (真討厭她的建議!)

美國警察攔下亂變換車道的年青駕車人後說：『I don’t like to see again the shit you were driving! 』-我不喜歡再看到，你那不認真開車的態度! 』

b.     指談話或文章，無法接受的解釋(nonsense, unacceptable explanations), 胡言亂語(insincere, pretentious talk/ sweet talk), 非真心的道歉(insincere apology), 或誇大等:

The judge was talking a lot of shit. 法官講一大堆廢話。He is full of shit. (胡說八道) = He is talking nonsense. 但，Oh, shit, I missed the bus! (唉，慘了，錯過公車了) 若用It’s a pity I missed the bus. 則感嘆意味就不夠強。

c.      低級的娛樂節目，特別是商業味道太強、老舊(old-fashioned) 毫無創意、

   不起眼(insignificant) 。太積極(to aggressive) 、或輕浮(disreputable) 的人。也指人在人生角色或奮發工作上的走運如，He is a tough shit. (硬角色) ，但也常指在倒楣中：Shit, I never had it so good! (想不到，從未有過如此好運!)

d.     受到侵犯或輕視的待遇(offensive or contemptuous treatment):

I took a lot of shit from her before I left. (離開前，她大大羞辱了我)

e.     指個人動產(personal effects, personal belongings)

Get your shit, both of you are moving. 走的時候，把隨身行李一起帶走。

f.       指一點也不，極少量(nothing, least quantity):

Of whom I hadn’t see shit. 在他們當中，我看到的都是夠分量的人物。

g.      Go ahead, and sit there with shit-eating grin. (感到很爽就表現出來) 。shit-eating grin不可直譯為『吃屎的笑』，真正意譯乃滿意、恥笑的表情(expression of satisfaction or a gloating look)

 注意兩地翻譯之不同)  右：歐巴馬樂壞了?!

h.     a shitheel, = 可鄙之人(despicable person) 如流氓(scoundrel) ，小子(bastard)

i.       另外美語也有chicken shit(雞屎) 與bull shit(牛糞) 之分，但後者較常用。有些女生不敢用Bull shit! 而改B.S. 代替，以免聽來不雅。

以上shit均作不可數名詞(uncountable) 用，即不加冠詞，也無複數形。

作動詞用：

a.     指說謊：(to lie) Don’t shit me. (別耍我) 。Sky is the limit, John, I shit you not. (沒什麼了不起，我不騙你)

b.     指經歷一項粗暴的回應(violent or extreme response) 、震驚、喧嘩或大笑(uproarious laughter) 。常用在：I thought I’d shit或I shit blue. (green or some other colors)= I feel shocked(alarmed, enraged) = 我震驚/ 動怒：例，

The second the going gets jumpy, you shit green ( by Patrick Mann)- 這一幕突然一出現，你嚇了一跳。He will shit when we tell him about this. 當我們告知他此事時，他會咆哮。

c.      shitcan作拋棄 (discard, throw away) 解

If it rained before he entered the tunnel, he would shitcan his plans. (進隧道前，若下雨，他就會放棄計劃)

d.     to shit in high cotton: 過優渥的生活 (live opulently)= eating high off the hog= 養尊處優，或台語的『坐著吃，倒咧放 (排泄) -即躺著拉屎』之相同意義

e.     Michael was sitting in his pants. (frightened, scared, panic) 十分驚嚇 (用法接近台語-嚇得挫屎、挫尿-大小便失控)

作形容詞用：(= not any, none at all一點也沒有)

We have shit-all evidence of what the killer looks like. (對凶手的外貌，我們毫無證據)

作副詞用：

作十分或完全地 (thoroughly)

I am shit out of luck. (= having no chance of success) 我已毫無成功勝算。Out of luck= down in luck, 倒楣之意，前面再加shit有「肯定」之義。

若再shit後再加sure= dead sure= pretty sure十分肯定

Shitsure, it’s gonna be a rough winter. 確信今天冬天嚴寒。(I am definitely sure…)

綜上觀之，shit 是日常生活中極通俗的用詞，當然並非我們想像的那麼白話(colloquial) 亦無那麼淫穢(obscene) 、齷齪(derogatory) 、鄙視(despicable)或下流(contemptuous) 。

有人認為用了shit，如I don’t give a shit to it. 即指責為：『低級語言的下流話.』。

這是shit唯一作可數名詞之用法。其實本句也可以用I don’t give a damn to…, 意謂我才不管或不理會…… (不在乎….)，並無某些批評者先入為主的想法，尤其用在老友(intimate friends)之間，非但無不敬之意，且另有親切(intimacy)之意涵。當然陌生人聽起來或有冒犯(offensiveness) 之意‧如下圖所示：

美國小布希總統執政時，遇上台灣阿扁當總統，為討好多數台灣人，阿扁多次明白地(expressly) 公然提倡台獨(pro-independence of Taiwan)- 大喊『一邊一國』 。雖然美國國務院多次透過A.I.T (美國在台協會) 勸阻阿扁，但無效。有一次阿扁再犯，據傳小布希在白宮對著幕僚不悅地說了一句，『Oh, shit! Not again! -又來了，X 的或真糟糕!』。不錯，以總統之尊也會講粗話? 若布希用『Dam it! 或God damn it! 』當然也可以，但可能顯得是已過時 (out of date) 的用法(註) ，也總缺少了shit 這個字在美語中的『傳神』地位吧!

【註：另如台灣年青人現在講「太誇張」，並非誇大其詞，而是指『太過分』。俚語之用字會隨時代改變，意義也可能不同，有時也會變為陳舊或不用(obsolete) 。用50年前出國時代用的俚語，別人可能聽不懂，聽起來也怪怪的。】

其實文字不論形或聲，本身並不具好或壞的意思，因為它們都是『人頻』所設計，其字義好、壞與字詞無關，而是與其本身字義給人的聯想力(suggestiveness) ， 及人類自己的聯想力(association) 有關。

走筆至此，感慨人生如『戲』也如『shit』! shit之好壞意思解讀，會因心境、場合及朋友交情而異，是不如意? 好玩? 好笑? 衰運? 有意思? 夠勁兒? 差勁? 差強人意? 或十分滿意等等…..聰明的讀者，請自行斟酌吧!!
