ULTRAFAST PLANE MAY MAKE THE TRIP FROM BEIJING TO NEW YORK CITY IN TWO HOURS-
BY JANISSA DELZO ON 2/24/18 AT 12:52 PM

Chinese scientists are hoping to build a hypersonic plane that would take only two hours to travel from Beijing to New York City—a trip that would usually take more than 13 hours.
hypersonic flight
In order to pull off the fast trip, the plane would have to travel at more than 5 times the speed of sound. The researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences who are behind the aircraft—dubbed ‘I-plane’—from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, revealed the details of the aircraft in a paper published in the journal Physics, Mechanics, & Astronomy.

Although it’s far too soon to begin field tests, the authors note that they’ve already begun testing a smaller version of the hypersonic jet in a wind tunnel. Apparently it was able to hit remarkably high speeds without experiencing any oppositional force.

“It’s a crazy design, but somehow they’ve managed to make it work,” a Chinese aircraft designer, who works on military research projects, but isn’t involved in I-plane project, told the South China Morning Post.

He said that the new design reflects the country’s desire to develop new strategic weapons before the United States does.
“This will require original rather than knock-off designs,” he told the newspaper. “It could lead to a huge step forward in hypersonic technology.”

Meanwhile, in the United States, a couple companies are working on similar aircrafts which are designed to drastically reduce flight time. In early January, Boeing unveiled its hypersonic vehicle design that could “pave the way for a future high-speed strike,” according to Aviation Week.  And Lockheed Martin has envisioned an equally fast aircraft called the “SR-72.”

“Speed is the next aviation advancement to counter emerging threats in the next several decades. The technology would be a game-changer in theater, similar to how stealth is changing the battle space today,” Brad Leland, Lockheed Martin program manager, Hypersonic, said in a statement.

Victoria and Abdul:
The Friendship that Scandalized England-
Near the end of her reign, Queen Victoria developed a friendship with an Indian servant, elevating him to trusted advisor and infuriating her court.

As part of the festivities to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, celebrating 50 years on the throne, the Queen hosted dozens of foreign rulers at a lavish banquet. She led a grand procession to Westminster Abbey in open carriage, escorted by the Indian cavalry, greeted screaming crowds on her palace balcony, and enjoyed fireworks in the garden. But of all the jubilee’s memorable events, it was the queen’s encounter with Abdul Karim that became the most significant. The young man had arrived in the United Kingdom as a “gift from India,” one intended to help Victoria address the Indian princes at her banquet. Karim would quickly prove to be the queen’s most trusted confidant, and the most despised member of the royal court.
Queen Victoria’s unusually close friendship with her Indian servant began at the 1887 celebration and spanned 14 years, a period captured in the new movie Victoria & Abdul, starring Judi Dench as the titular queen. Karim was the queen’s beloved munshi, the teacher who gave her daily Urdu lessons, educated her on Indian affairs, and introduced her to curry. Queen Victoria in turn showered him with gifts, titles and honors, much to the resentment of the royal family. When the queen died in 1901, her children burned every letter she sent Karim, whom they unceremoniously deported back to India. Yet his record lives on, thanks in large part to his diary, preserved by generations of descendants.

That diary was only recently unearthed by Shrabani Basu, the historian who wrote the movie’s source text. As Basu recounts in her book of the same name, Karim was born near Jhansi, the second-oldest child of six. His father, Haji Wuzeeruddin, was a hospital assistant, a skilled position that required some medical qualifications. While this occupation did not place Wuzeeruddin in the upper class, it was a good job, one that allowed him to hire a Maulvi, or Muslim scholar, to tutor his son. Under the Maulvi’s tutelage, Karim learned both Persian and Urdu. He eventually secured a clerk position at a jail in Agra, one where his father and the brothers of his soon-to-be wife both worked. It was there that Karim was handpicked to serve the somewhat recently christened Empress of India, Queen Victoria.
The jail superintendent, John Tyler, offered Karim the opportunity. Tyler had recently escorted 34 inmates to the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886 in London, where he showed off the carpets they had woven as part of their rehabilitation program. Queen Victoria was impressed, and had asked Tyler during his trip about selecting two Indian attendants to assist her at her Golden Jubilee. The men would facilitate communication with Indian dignitaries and wait on the queen. Karim was paired with Mohamed Buxshe, an experienced servant who ran the household of a British general. Compared with Buxshe, Karim was woefully unprepared for his new duties. But before he departed for London, he received a crash course in palace etiquette and the English language, as well as a brand-new wardrobe.
Queen Victoria’s first impression of Karim was recorded in her diaries, where she deemed him “tall with a fine serious countenance.” After their jubilee duties concluded, Karim and Buxshe traveled with the queen to her summer home on the Isle of Wight. There, Karim distinguished himself by surprising the sovereign with one of his favorite recipes. Using spices he had brought from Agra, Karim cooked a chicken curry with dal and pilau. According to Victoria biographer A.N. Wilson, the queen declared the dish “excellent” and added it to her regular menu rotation.

Embarrassing Grammatical Mistakes Even Smart People Make
6. SHOE-IN(誤)
"Shoo-in" is what you really want to write when you're trying to say that someone is a sure winner. It's because when you "shoo" something you're urging it in a certain direction.
Put on shoes.
7. EMIGRATED TO
"Emigrate" and "from" always go together, as do "immigrate" and "to." To emigrate is to come from somewhere, and to immigrate is to go to somewhere. "Colin emigrated from Ireland to the United States" means the same as "Colin immigrated to the United States from Ireland."
8. OVERUSE OF APOSTROPHES(過度使用’的記號)
These little guys are ubiquitously misused. Apostrophes indicate one of two things: possession or letters missing, as in "Sara's iPad" and "it's" for "it is" (second i missing). They don't belong on plurals. "FAQs," for example, should not have an apostrophe. Also, people often make a mistake with their own last name. If you want to refer to your family but don't want to list everyone's first name write "The Johnsons" not "The Johnson's." Another big one: Decades should not have apostrophes. For example, "1980s" is correct but "1980's" is not.
 9. PROSTRATE CANCER(誤)
This one is a simple spelling mistake resulting from an extra r. "Prostrate" actually means to lie face down. The "prostate" gland is a part of the male reproductive anatomy.
10. SLIGHT OF HAND
A "slight" is an insult, whereas "sleight" indicates dexterity or cunning. It's why "sleight of hand" is commonly used in the world of magic and illusion.
說明:‘slight a. 在英文屬同音異義字,其他如:piece(一小片/peace和平:Peace is won by pieces. These two hats are as like as two peas.(兩頂帽子唯妙唯肖) 。 fright n.

"Embarrassing Grammatical Mistakes Even Smart People Make"
Note:

When someone uses grammar incorrectly do you make an assumption about his or her intelligence or education? Like it or not, words, spelling, and punctuation are powerful and can leave a lasting impression on others. But even the most educated people often unknowingly make common writing and speaking flubs. Check out this long list of ubiquitous grammar mistakes. Guarantee: You'll either learn something new or find a few of your biggest pet peeves here. (And likely, you'll find fault with my own use of the English language. I welcome your thoughts, critiques, and insults in the comments.)
Christina DesMarais/2017

1.     FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE(誤)
FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVEd(正)- 『先到先接受服務』
原句=Those who come first shall be served first.
It should actually be "served." Without the d, the phrase above suggests that the first individual who arrives will be the one who serves everyone, which is not the idiom's intent.
2.  I COULD CARE LESS(誤)
I Couldn’t care less(正)- 『我亳不在乎-無所顧慮』
說明:Think about this one for a minute. The way it's written above suggests you possess care which still could be allocated to the situation in question. "I couldn't care less" is correct because it communicates that "I have no more care to give."

less常與否定詞連用,表示肯定:there are no less than 10 people injured.= There are as many as 10 people injured.

3.  IRREGARDLESS(誤)
regardless(僅管)=anyway;without regard for objections
This is not a word. It's simply "regardless," as in "Regardless of what you think about grammar, you'll look silly if you use it incorrectly."
說明:regard  n. 關於,regardless adv. =anyway ; regardless of = in spite of = despite.
**還有,表示「關於」,有人用regarding to, 是錯誤,只可用regarding=concerning=respecting一字,或用in(with)regard to…
4. "I" AS THE LAST WORD IN A SENTENCE.( I主格和受格Me之正確使用)
This mistake is remarkably common, yet a correct example would be "Karlee talked with Brandon and me." The trick to getting this one straight is to take the other person's name out of the sentence and see if your personal pronoun choice still sounds right. "Karlee talked with I" is awkward and incorrect.
“Karlee talked with me” 才是正確,因with(介系詞) 應接受格。他例:It is something between you and me.(此事不足為外人道也。) He and I are close friends. He和I均須用主格。
5. "ME" AS THE FIRST WORD IN A SENTENCE.
I hear people saying things such as "Me and Brandon met at Starbucks this morning" all the time, even though it's always wrong. "Brandon and I met at Starbucks this morning" is correct.
說明:Me and人,是錯誤的用法,因作主詞用,須用:人and I。 單數三方面的說法是, “You, he and I are practicing English.” We, you and they are required to be present by nine. Me, too.= So do I.= 我也是。 另外,口語英文(colloquial English) 常用It’s me…. 是否可以用It’s I……?
It’s me that he is laughing at.
It is I that am laughing at him.
Note: 口語英文,me常代替I, 如It’s me私That’s me是十分普遍亦被接受,但在written English(書面用法), 則須分辨I, 和me。
She loves Betty (貓咪) more than I. (她比我更愛貓) =She loves Betty more than I (do).
She loves Betty more than me. She loves Betty more than (she loves)me.
這與漢文相差甚大,稱呼對方為『貴』,如貴友(your friend)、貴國(your country)、貴夫人(your wife) 。
