台灣俗語的智慧(30)

1)     想貪著鑽鷄欄 (xiun tam dio nen gei lam)

註解：

貪= greed= avarice；鑽進= sneak into；鷄欄，鷄籠=cage for chickens

直譯：Those who think of greed will be jailed or put into a chicken cage.

鷄欄，原義為關鷄的竹欄，亦可引伸為吃虧，或因犯法而被懲罰或囚禁。

意譯：Those who are greedy will end up being put in jail. -凡是貪心者終究會吃上官司(被監禁)- 得不償失。(Loss is greater than gains)

另註：

A.    勸戒人勿貪，另有俗語：『貪者貧字壳』，貪與貧兩字皆含一貝字，前者為今+貝=短暫的錢 temporary riches，貧則為分+貝=散財=守不住的錢= poverty。故本句可譯為，He who is greedy is poor. (貪者必窮)

B.    台語的句法，某一行為或動作+著+結果=若……..則….. = if……. ，另如：『欲好額著打併』= If you want to be rich, you should work hard.

2)     鷄蛋命咱己輪 (gei nen miah gah gih lian)

註解：

鷄蛋命，喻「命中註定」，孤立無援。咱己= by oneself；輪=轉動= get/move along。本句乃自我抱怨的話

直譯：A person born with the same fate as that of an egg is destined to move/manage by oneself. (without help from others)-具天生鷄蛋命者凡事靠自己。

3)     嬴嬴茭博到輸 (yian yian giao buah gau suh)-本來會嬴的一塲賭博却輸了(含遺憾之意)

註解：

本來看好會嬴的一塲賭博却輸了；台語博茭指賭博，嬴茭與輸茭乃賭博的輸嬴。

直譯：A gamble seems likely to win in the beginning but is lost at the end. 或

       It is regrettable that a gamble should have been lost.

意譯：An enterprise or undertaking is lost though it was full of prospect. (原來前景看好的事業却失敗了)

它與漢語『煮熟的鴨子飛掉了』之義略近

4)     三講四呣著 /三講四漏氣 (san gong si m dio) / (san gong si lau kwi)

註解：

三講=講三句話；呣著= 不對，講錯；漏氣= 講話前後兜不攏。三與四之比乃誇大之意；漏氣指事情前後不一致。

意譯：All that one said is incorrect. All that one said is inconsistent. (說話全不正確或不一致)

5)     挖鼻屎吃鹼鹼  (kang peen sai jia giam giam)

註解：

鼻屎= shit from nose。原句為「佔了他人便宜却佯裝不知，或認為理所當然」之義。當然「鼻屎」是穢物，丟棄唯恐不及，還吃下。本句比喻雖低級，但寓意極深又通俗，含「不屑」與「輕視」之意。

意譯：He who has taken advantage of others pretends not to know it or takes it for granted. (佔了人便宜還假裝不知或認為理所當然)

或 It is despicable that one does not feel ashamed about the favor he should not have got, or the duty he should have failed to fulfill. (令人鄙視的是，對於不該得到的好處，或未盡到的義務並不感到可恥)

另註：

1)     台語除了吃鼻屎外，另外罵人『吃屎』，意謂不明是非之義。中外對shit (屎) 字全是負面意思，如You are full of shit. (你滿口胡言；說話顛三倒四) 但若非熟友，宜避免，因它仍屬dirty language.(不雅) 。一位美國警察攔下一位開跑車的少年吔，並吆喝道，『I don’t like to see again the shit of your driving! 』『下次再這樣亂開車，別被我看到! 』- the shit of driving- 開車接近違規的程度。

2)     又另一俗語『銅鑼放在衣手袖內打』意為『自吹自擂』-或自我吹噓而不知恥。

   1)  *袂曉駛船嫌溪獈-不會開船者抱怨溪面大窄

   直譯：One who is unable to steer a boat complains about the narrowness of a stream.

   意譯：One who is incapable complains about unfavorable circumstances. 做事無能者抱怨客觀環境不好

   
   

   2)  坐船的人呣知船咧晃-略近當局者迷，旁觀者清

   直譯：Those on a boat are not aware that the boat is shaking.

   意譯：Those in a game are not aware of the situation as clearly as spectators.

   
   

   3)     一時風駛一時船-見機行事

   直譯：Based on the wind type or speed, one is steering a boat.

   意譯：One takes actions in accordance with situations or circumstances present.

   
   

   4)     双脚踏双船-三心兩意/心猿意馬

   直譯：feet stepping on two boats.

   意譯：aiming at two things at the same time

   
   

   5)     船破海沈底-計劃失敗，全盤損失

   直譯：With broken holes, a ship will sink.

   意譯：Should a plan fail, one will suffer complete loss

1)     *十按九無影-十次約會九次不到 (台語「按」有約定之意)

Nine times out of then, a person failes to show up as he promises.

A person who often breaks his promise to do something for others.

2)     呣知香臭 (不知好壞/ 不領情)

直譯：One cannot differ between what is fragrant and what is stink.

意譯：One fails to appreciate others’ good intentions. (in accusing others)

3)     粗腳重蹄-指責他人做事不細心

One moves or walks rather awkwardly. (One should be more graceful in actions.)

4)     龜脚也是龜內肉-龜脚屬於整隻龜的一部分

意譯：小損失是全部的一部分

A minor loss is included in the whole loss of someone.

A small portion of principal is counted/ or included in the whole principal.

5)     *水到船着浮 (水到渠成)

When water flows in, the boat will float. / A boat cannot move without water.

6)     *剖柴含柴砧-劈柴時連墊柴的砧也一起砍下；對他人善意提供對自己的消息不領情

One is so unappreciative as to disclose the name of an informer of a secret.

1)     歹竹出好筍 -不好的父親養出好的後代

A bamboo of bad breed may breed bamboo shoots of better breed.

2)     尼姑做滿月-尼姑產子請吃彌月酒，幾乎很少或不可能發生

Something rarely or never happens.

3)     吃睏無分寸-無節制的吃與睡。要控制飲食與睡眠是不易的It is hard to control one’s eating amount or sleeping hours. 適當的飲食與睡眠是重要的Moderate eating and sleeping is important.

4)     青瞴沒看槍-瞎眼者看不見槍枝

Blind people are ignorant of imminent danger around.

5)     媠人無媠命 (紅顏薄命) -媠其音同水，乃台灣古字，其義為美貌

A fair lady may not have a good fate which is parallel to her beauty.

6) 捧屎摸面-錯把令人羞恥的事充當榮譽向人煊耀

disgracing oneself with something humiliating.

1.     歹子飼老父 (爸) A bad boy when young ends up a good one , feeding old dad.

2.     槌仔痕快過，言語喔燁  The smitten scar left on the skin may disappear easily but the bad curse or language used on one is hardly forgotten.

註: 槌仔 a stick or rod for smiting one for committing an error用來體罸的小木棍 ；喔=慢， 燁= 熄滅

3.     吃乎肥肥假乎捶捶  One eats too much to be a fat guy, pretending to be a fool. Irresponsibility.

4.     吃人一斤還人四兩  doing something in return for what one has received from others. Being grateful.(知恩圖報)

5.    袂前好額驚著賊偷 Before becoming rich, one is worried about his riches being stolen.  One is too cautious about one’s wealth not yet uncertain to come.

   註  好額= 致富 = become rich 著賊偷= 遇窃賊

6.    甘蔗好吃, 袂凍双頭甜 A sugar can not be sweet at both ends. One cannot get a fruitful result from both sides. By working hard, one finds a pursuit more and more fruitful.

故漢文說「倒吃甘蔗」-含漸入佳境之義

7.     飼老鼠咬布袋 Feeding a mouse, we rather suffer from the damage it does .

笑詼的台灣話

1.    新例無設，舊例無滅 未創新習俗前不毁掉舊習俗(設與滅押韻)

Do not abolish old practices until new ones are established or created.

             

2.     漲死好膽，餓死無膽 Those bold or greedy gain too much, while cowards are starved to death.

3.     早來早死、慢來慢死、沒來富死 Those who come earliest

die (perish) early; those who come later die later; those not coming become richest or make a killing)

4. 有人成子，有人賣子 (有錢人使兒子，有錢、有身分、有地位。無錢人則賣子求生) 此處「成」應唸成〔chianh〕，乃漢語(chen)的轉音。

The wealthy people give more to their sons or daughters when married; whereas the poor ones have to sell their children to keep themselves alive.

5.    人袂凍掛無事牌 
指人有旦夕禍福，而這些旦夕禍福也不是自己所能預知的，因此也就有戒慎恐懼的必要

Beware of something unexpected to happen, either good fortune or bad luck.

6.     死皇帝卡輸一个活乞食 a dead emperor is not worth a  beggar alive

7.     巧的吃戇的，戇的吃天公 聰明人佔笨的人便宜；笨的人只好聽天由命

The clever take advantage of the foolish; the foolish cannot but resign themselves to fate
