第二章：字源/字根相同字

(Words with Identical Roots) ：

60) excepted /exceptional:              

exception n. 例外；

exception n.

a. 反對

None take ~ to (object to)the proposal. 無人反對此提案。

b. 例外

*with the exception of + n.  以….為例外

There is no ~ to the rule. 每條規則均有例外。

=There is no rule but has ~s.=There is no rule without ~s.=Every rule has ~s.

*有些商店有下列佈告在店內或店外*：

【No Checks】

=《Cash only. Sorry, no (without) ~ s. 》    

【No Exceptions】

(現金交易，恕無例外)。

在競選期間為謝絕候選人(政客)進入某些公共塲所拉票，有人第一句改為：

           【No Politicians】

~ +adj. ~ glamorous 十分有魅力

1.     excepted a.被除外的；except vt. 除外(exclude)

《No one ~d. 》 沒有人例外。            

  **以下為一些常易拼音錯誤的字：

accept v 接受 acceptance n. (不是acception) intercept v. 攔截，interception n.

expect v. 期待expectation n. (不是 expection) receive v. 接待，reception n.

inspect v. 檢查 inspection n. physical ~體檢 conceive v. 構想，conception n.

perceive v. 觀察perception deceive v. 欺騙deception n.

61) exhaustive / exhaustible /exhausted:

以上三字均由動詞exhaust (耗盡) 轉成，前二字指事物，最後一字指人

或事物：

1. exhaustive a. 耗盡的 (leaving nothing left)；澈底的 (thoroughgoing)

Adolf Hitler’s political and military record has been ~ ly documented. 希特勒

政治與軍事經歷已被完整無缺地記載。

2. exhaustible a. = to be exhausted 會用盡的

Scientists predicted that oil reserve in this area will be~ in less than 20 years.

科學家預言本區油料儲存20年內會用盡。

inexhaustible  a.用之不竭的

3. exhausted a.

a. 指人：(精疲力盡) We felt tired out; we were ~ (tired out). 我們精疲力盡。

b. 指事物： (已耗盡的)

The oil well is ~. 油井已乾涸。an ~ volcano 一座死火山

exhaust muffler 汽車消音器 (exhaust n. 廢氣)

62) exhibit /exhibition:

    

1. exhibit n. C. (可數名詞) 陳列品；展覽品。~ v. 展示

2. exhibition U. 展覽；an art ~ 藝術品展覽

Stop making an ~ of yourself.  別大吵大鬧 (以引人注目)。

比較：

ceremony: 典禮

wedding ~ 婚禮；funeral ~ 喪禮

Do not stand on ceremony不必拘束

commencement (graduation) ~畢業禮
