A Nasty or a Clean Woman?

During the campaign for US presidential election 2016, Donald Trump, one of the candidate called the other one, Hilary Clinton “Nasty Woman” at the final debate. Then after the debate, Hilary and her ally began to condemn Trump for insulting her and all other women in the US, as well.

2016年美國總統大選期間，川普在最後一場辯論中稱對手希拉蕊為「齷齪的婦女」。

辯論後，希拉蕊及其同黨開始指責川普污辱了希拉蕊及全美國的婦女。

Some of leading supporters such as Michelle Obama, the first Lady and Elizbeth Warren, an outstanding senator began to escalate the condemnation to a much higher level by using their eloquence, trying to cause all other women to have a strong enmity and hostility against Trump.  This might have a big and poor ripple effect on the chances or probability of Trump’s being elected.

有些支持希拉蕊的婦女領袖，例如總統夫人，和參議員Warren，利用其優越口才，升高她們的攻擊力道，試圖引發其他婦女對川普的敵視。此事也許對川普可能被選上的機會，產生大而不良的漣漪效應。

Now by taking a closer look, let us examine the word, “nasty”, its exact definition and ample implication in all aspects.  Well, based on Webster’s Dictionary, the synonyms for “nasty” include dirty, filthy, foul, disgusting, nauseous, contaminated, unclean, defiled, and the like. While in Chinese, the corresponding definitions could be…..

I am not here to determine to what extent about whether Trump was right in slamming Hilary or how much Hilary Clinton’s behavior consists with what the word, “nasty” implies. The meaning of “nasty” may refer to an unclean state, physically, physiologically, or spiritually, etc.

本人無意在此決定，川普重力批評希拉蕊有幾分是正確，或者希拉蕊的行為符合了nasty這個字的含義。此字也許指身體上、生理上或精神上的不乾淨等。

In ancient China, some women were sometimes forbidden to enter a temple or an ancestors’ shrine hall to worship god, goddess or their ancestors simply because of physical uncleanness, such as during their menstruation period. In other words, the ancient Chinese emphasized the importance of bodily cleanliness while showing respect to gods or paying homage to ancestors in front of their tombs.

古代中國有些婦女有時被禁止進入寺廟、祠堂，去祭拜神明或祖先，尤其在月經期間。易言之，對神明及祖先之拜祭，中國人強調身體潔淨的重要。

Therefore, the definition of “nasty” is expanded to a broader one.  Now, broadly defined, it refers to one’s character and /or behavior, which fails to conform to standard or required morality code or social etiquette. That means moral uncleanness. I think what Trump meant must have been Hilary’s character, leaving much to be desired as a presidential candidate.

因此，nasty之定義被加以擴大。如今，廣義為，指某人的道德行為未符合準縄的標準。亦即意謂道德的不潔淨。我想川普真正意指希拉蕊的品德，不符總統候選人之標準。

A Russian prostitute once proudly declared to her friends, “I am untainted for I am saving those tainted souls.” Based on her declaration, we might come to a conclusion that a person might not necessarily be called “nasty” solely because of his/her “soiled” body!

一位蘇俄妓女曾經驕傲地宣稱：「因為解救那些不净的人，我的身體是潔淨的」。據此，我們可獲結論，僅僅因為身體骯髒，未必就是nasty。

Usually a person who is unclean can be purified by being cleaned up physically.  But for a dirty or impure “soul” of a person, none but Jehovah or the Buddha or Mohamed can save him/her.

通常身體不清潔的人，只要洗净就算净化，但若靈魂不净，只能靠耶和華、佛陀、或穆罕默德來解救。

A person is required to be baptized before he/she is permitted to become a Christian. By baptism, his/her physical dirtiness or sins can or may be cleaned up.  Per Christianity, no one’s filthiness in soul or sins can be cleaned up except by repentance.  Thus, by means of a pious religion, a dirty, or ‘nasty’ person can be purified spiritually.  That’s the only way of cure. But for those who committed too many sins to be saved or purified, we call them “past praying for” or “past remedy” or “incurable.”

信徒必須净身方才成為基督徙。净身洗淨人肉體上的不净和罪過。但依教義，心靈之髒，只能靠悔改才能洗凈。因此，藉著虔誠信仰，精神才能净化。那是唯一藥方。對於犯下太多罪惡無法被解救者，叫做「罪不可赦」。

Trump calls Hilary “nasty” or “corrupt” mainly because, I suppose, of her having made so much ill-gotten money during the period when she was first lady, senator, and secretary of state. We have no verifiable evidence that she did make such a killing illegally.  But her defamation, I am afraid, will surely exist, despite her persistent denial.

川普叫希「骯髒」或「A錢的」，我想只要因為她在擔任第一夫人、參議員和國務卿等職位任内賺取不少不義所得。儘管她持續否認，她的不名譽仍然存在。

Except some different physiological organs, each woman is basically the same as a man.  She is equally stupid, or intelligent; she is as capable or clumsy as a man; she is as cunning or shrewd as a man; she is as ambitious or stubborn as a man; she can be a president or a prime minister as a man; she is a murderer or a liar as a man…. etc.  But she can bear a child, which a man cannot!

除了某些生理器官不同以外，婦女基本上和男人相同。她與他同樣愚蠢或聰明；她像他一樣能幹或笨拙；她和他一樣狡猾或精明；她的野心勃勃如男人一樣；她也可以當總統或首相；她可以像男人當兇手或撒謊者….. 等等。不過她能生育，男人卻不能。

Trump keeps accusing Hilary of criminal record, calling her corrupt, further pointing out “her criminal record threatens the foundation of our government.”  But if the record should be untrue, perhaps, the usage of “nasty” may have gone a little too far. However, in view of Trump’s educational, and social background, this might be easily excusable.

川普不停控訴希拉蕊犯罪記錄層出不窮，說她貪污腐敗，並進一步指出：「犯罪記錄已危害政府的根基」。當然萬一此記錄不實在，用’nasty’ 這個字罵人也許太過分。不過，鑒於川普的教育與社會背景，會輕易被諒解。

Should the Trump’s assertion that Hilary is ‘ nasty’ be true, the term ”nasty” may be appropriate, of course, in a sense, though the word still sounds a bit impolite, disrespectful or obscene especially for a presidential candidate. Despite this, as is known to the public, mutual slamming or accusation of candidates during campaign may be groundless, or unverifiable except through legal procedures, which may take years to find out.

萬一川普的主張斷言，說希拉蕊是’nasty’，的確屬實，那麼當然在某一層面的意義上，這個用字還算適當，雖然聴起來還是有點不禮貌、不尊敬、或淫穢的，尤其對一位總統候選人而言。儘管如此，如眾所知，候選人彼此的攻擊、漫罵，也許缺乏根據，或無法求證，除非經由法律訴訟，但它需曠日持久，方能找到正確答案。

In conclusion,  in  less than two  weeks  the  election result  will come out  and  the  so-called  'NASTY'  woman  might be  elected.  Who  knows?  Then  it  shall  be  epoch-making.  It will  mark  an  unprecedented  record  in  US  history:  most extraordinary of all,   the  first  female  president  elected ever since 1776  whether  she  be  'NASTY'  or not!
最後，在不到兩周，美國總統選舉結果即將揭曉，屆時這位所謂的『齷齪的女人』也許被選上。那將是畫時代的空前創舉，更不尋常的是，自美國1776年宣佈獨立以來，首位女性總統誕生了，不論她髒不髒!
